Abstract

The aim of the study is to examine the socio-economic status of farmer’s cooperatives in the area using Fadama Community Association Vwang, plateau state, Nigeria. Primary source of data was used through the administration of structured questionnaire to the respondents. The responses were presented and analyzed using simple percentage and chi-square. The results of the study has shown that over ¼ of the respondents (79%) have acquired various levels of education and majority of whom are youth constituting (63%) and happily married (45%) since they are able to carter for their families. The null hypothesis that “Agricultural cooperative societies have no positive effect in achieving food security in Nigerian” was rejected from the outcome of the chi-square analysis. The study therefore concluded that agricultural cooperative society has positive effects in improving the socioeconomic and food security sustainability in Nigeria. Therefore, this study recommends among others that adequate training and special scheme/support should be provided in addition to the provision of loan and subsidy on agricultural inputs by relevant authorities such as government at all levels and Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs).
