Abstract

This study aimed at evaluating the effect of oral administration of hibiscus calyx on testicular dimensions, sperm reserve and lipid profile of Rabbits. A total of sixty mixed breed male rabbits (9 months old) were used for the study. The animals were randomly assigned into three equal groups (20 each). Rabbits in group 1(n=20) serve as control and were given normal drinking water. Animals in group 2 and 3(n=20) were administered a daily oral dose of aqueous solution of hibiscus calyx at the rate of 0.25 mg and 0.50 mg respectively. Analysis of variance was done for all recorded parameters using appropriate sub routine of SAS (1999). Means were separated using least significant difference (LSD) method on the level P<0.05.

The results indicate significantly lower mean values (P<0.05) for all testicular parameters (weight, circumference, volume and length in treatment groups. Sperm reserve was also significantly lower in treatment groups. A dose dependant decrease in all testicular parameters was associated with consumption of hibiscus calyx. Similarly significantly lowered mean values of low density lipoprotein cholesterol was recorded for treatment groups (P<0.05). The mean values of total cholesterol, high density lipoprotein cholesterol and triglycerides were similar for all groups. Findings of this research indicate that oral administration of hibiscus calyx is associated with diminished testicular dimensions, reduced sperm reserve and lowered serum level of low density lipoprotein cholesterol in Rabbits.
