Abstract

Stress mediated changes in the tissue carbohydrate profile in Penaeus monodon revealed a decrease in hexose, pentose and ketose Sugars in the muscle and hepatopancreas. A concurrent hyperglycemia in the haemolymph was noticed. The decrease of free sugars in tissues attributes their utilization through the pathways such as HMP and Pentose cycle for energy derivation. The decrease of the ketose sugars is a specific evidence to suggest the glycolytic mechanism operating in stressed prawns. The above temporal depletion of carbohydrates may have a bearing in the prepathogenesis and disease pronouncement.
