Abstract

For the first time the males of Procamallanus spiralis obtained from the intestine of Johnieops macrorhynus (Mohan) of Kakinada are described and figured. P. spiralis is originally reported in Heterobranchus anguillaris from Egypt. Khan & Begum (1971) recovered a single female worm from the body cavity of Tachysurus caelatus from Karachi. Bilquees et al. (1977) also recorded it for one female (1/20) from the intestine of Telradon lunaris from Karachi coast. But all these descriptions are based on females only. They could not recovered male worms of P. spiralis. The detailed description of the males of P. spiralis is given now. The description is based on 05 males and 10 female specimens, out of 50 hosts examined, 10 were infected. The male of P. spiralis has close resemblance with P. sihamai is having 6 pairs of caudal papillae, unequal spicules, absence of gubernaculum and eleven number of spiral thickenings. But they can be distinguished by differences in the number of teeth (4 vs 2) and arrangement of caudal papillae, presence of the tail spike and size of spicules. Besides these characters it also differs in various body measurements. Kakinada is the new locality record and J. macrorhynus represents new host for this species. This is the first record of males of the species.
