Abstract

Endodontic therapy has benefited in recent decades from the introduction of new procedures and technology that have improved result and predictability. Important characteristics such as the operating microscope and ultrasonics (US) have become important in a variety of dental operations in periodontology, to a lesser extent in restorative dentistry, and to a much greater amount in endodontics. US in endodontics has improved the standard of care and is a critical auxiliary in the management of challenging situations. Since its inception, US has found increased use in procedures such performing endodontic surgery, cleaning and contouring canal openings, obturating root canals, and removing intracanal debris and blockages. This in-depth analysis of the literature intends to demonstrate the various applications of US in clinical endodontics and places special emphasis on the wide-ranging uses in a contemporary endodontic practice (J Endod 2007;33: 81–95).
