Abstract

The rise in the price of fossil fuel with the negative environmental impact of global warming and exhaust emissions has aroused interest of researcher explaining alternative sources of energy and this research focused on methane production. Methane gas is an entirely natural resource produced by the fermentation of organic waste with the help of bacteria in a digester. The project aimed at the construction and fabrication of a biogas digester made up of two metal drum and a moving gasholder. The gas holder is made to float on a water jacket of its own, the floating gas collector is made of stainless steel, which will rest on two metals drums of 200ltrs which were both opened at one end and fixed together by wielding to form one cylinder with a gauge created at the center that controls the movement of the used slurry from the newly introduce one. The cylinder which is called the Digester was mounted horizontally on a concrete base made of cement, the metal inlet and outlet pipe were fitted into the two end at 10cm from floor level. The inlet pipe length doubles the outlet pipe for smooth movement of used slurry. The presence of methane gas was tested by burning of paper and produced a blue flame colour.
